Mental Health Services
A child who has suffered abuse often needs on-going help from a therapist who is trained in working with victims of abuse. The SAIN Team Coordinator or the Family Service Advocate may provide referrals to therapists who have specialized training and experience in working with children. The Child Abuse Task Force of the advocacy center has created a comprehensive list, available for parents/caretakers, of the local specialized services for their children that may assist them to begin the process of healing.
The Advocacy Center also offers the Early Family Support (EFS) Project which allows a specialized mental health clinician to meet immediately with non-offending family members and child victims following disclosure of child abuse in the interview process at the District Attorney's office. The purpose of the EFS Project is to provide immediate support and education for family members and to identify mental health resources in the child's community who will be able to provide on-going support and therapy. The EFS Project can provide up to three visits with referred clients for stabilization; it is not a long-term therapy service.
The Northwestern District Attorney's Child Abuse Coordinator also refers families/caretakers to local mental health providers.
