The Northwestern Children's Advocacy Project, Inc.
_The Northwestern Children's Advocacy Project is the non-profit,
fundraising arm of the Children’s Advocacy Center. It is a 501(3) (C) corporation authorized to
receive tax deductible donations. The
project leases and maintains a child friendly, private farmhouse renovated by
Smith Vocational and Agricultural High School students. Our community partner, Cooley Dickinson
Hospital (CDH) provides lawn care and maintenance services. The medical room at the house is used by Dr.
Ray Conway, who has been trained in forensic examination. The CDH Auxiliary purchased
a colposcope for the room, allowing non-invasive examination of the child.
The house is the focus for bringing the child and non-offending parent into a safe, child friendly environment in which the child can be interviewed by a multidisciplinary team of law enforcement, Department of Children and Families investigators , an Assistant District Attorney and other professionals. The family is given referrals to area mental health professionals for therapy and support. Instead of a child being shuttled from one place to another, the house provides a homelike place where services for a child are brought to him/her.
The Children’s Advocacy Project sponsors the annual Child Abuse Awareness Month Kickoff Breakfast, on the first Thursday of each April. This event is attended by over 300 members of the community, and each year we honor two people who have provided outstanding service to abused children. This is the major fundraiser which supports the work of the CAC. The next breakfast is April 5th, 2012 at The Log Cabin.
